Drawing upon his experience and expertise, Benoît
Rolland only replicates historic French bows.
Reproducing entirely a bow is a rare occurrence at the
Studio, but for the purpose of complex restorations,
Rolland applies his familiarity with historical styles
to recreate a part in a bow, substituting for deteriorated
or too fragile parts.
Benoît Rolland undertakes the challenge of each
replication as an opportunity to learn from the
historical masters, always with a profound respect for
the integrity of their creations. Full replicas are
accompanied by a certificate, and are clearly
imprinted with the Benoît Rolland mark on the stick,
under the frog.
He accepts some commissions from professional
musicians who play with a rare bow. They sometimes
require a replication of their bow which would not
only recreates its lines but also its playability and
tonal qualities.
Mr. Rolland keeps the original bow for two weeks to
two months at the studio in order to analyze its
characteristics; he is often able to find woods of
great likeness in his collection of ancient pernambuco
wood and ebony.
Once he selected the suitable wood, Benoît may
reproduce the tools that were originally used to chisel
certain parts of the bow (the eyes and rings,
for instance). In any case, Mr. Rolland has never,
so far, made more than one replication of an
original bow.
